IMMEDIATELY AFTER SUNLESS SPRAY APPLICATION

Refrain from showering as long as possible, ideally for 24 hours. Sunless color begins showing development about 4 hours post application and continues to darken for up to 24 hours.

First (and most importantly) you must allow your sunless tan to develop. It is recommended to wait at least 8-24 hours before your first shower. If you cannot wait this amount of time, you may prevent your tan from fully developing. As a rule of thumb, remember the longer you wait, the better.

WHAT TO AVOID POST-APPLICATION

  • Avoid hand washing for at least 8-10 hours.

  • Avoid wearing socks and shoes after your tanning session.

  • Avoid applying makeup, moisturizer and deodorant for the duration of time between your spray session and your first shower.

  • Avoid wearing tight clothing for at least 6 hours. This includes bras, spandex, tight-fitting jeans, shirts, long boots, leggings, etc.

  • Avoid swimming, showering and vigorous exercise must be avoided for at least 8 hours after your session.

SHOWERING

The first shower after your tanning application will differ from your usual shower routine. Follow these steps to ensure proper rinsing:

1. Use lukewarm/cool water - rinse only, no products should be used at this time.

2. Duration of shower should be no more than 60 seconds.

3. Do not be alarmed if cosmetic bronzer washes away during this point. This is supposed to happen as it is suitable for “sealing” the sunless color.

4. Pat dry and wait 30 minutes before taking a regular shower and use of soaps, shampoos, etc.

SHAVING & HAIR REMOVAL

  • Do not shave for 24 hours after application of tan, or until after the first shower.

  • Razor-Shave only, do not wax.

When shaving:

Use a fresh razor (dull razor blades call for repeated razor/skin contact. This will not only irritate your skin but also cause your spray to lighten or strip off entirely).

Use light-pressure when handling razor. Pressing down on the skin too hard will also cause deterioration of the spray solution.

** TIP: Replace your shaving cream with sulfate/paraben-free hair conditioner. Regular shaving creams strip color.

MAINTAINING YOUR SUNLESS TAN

  • Moisturizing is key in maintaining and prolonging your sunless color.

  • Moisturize at least twice a day. Ensure that your moisturizers are sulfate, paraben and oil-free.

  • Avoid long hot baths and showers. Stick to lukewarm/cool temperatures.

  • Avoid exfoliating products.

  • Do not use loofahs or washcloths.

  • If exercise or any other activities that lead to excessive sweating is unavoidable, ensure a towel is on your to pat skin dry. Perspiration may cause excessive color-streaking.

  • Pat your skin dry after bath, shower or swimming. Rubbing your skin with a towel or any other material will lead to uneven stripping.

  • Hot tubs, chlorine, and saltwater can cause premature fading of spray tan results.

  • Avoid any spa treatments for a few days after your tan.

  • Avoid manicures and pedicures. Opt for a polish change instead but beware of any acetone-based polish remover your salon may use. Ensure that acetone is only being applied to the nail itself and not the surrounding skin.

WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS WILL LIGHTEN OR MAKE A SUNLESS TAN SPOTTY:

  • Dove soap and Dove products.

    • Although we love Dove products as much as the next person, the moisture-retaining ingredients create a film on top of the skin. These specific ingredients create a barrier between the spray solution and your skin, ultimately leading to streakiness and quickly-fading results.

  • Hair removal lotion or bleach products.

  • Anti-aging products, acne medication, Retin-A and salicylic acid products.

  • Skin toners containing alcohols or witch hazel.

  • Pore cleansing strips, facial masks and scrubs.

FINAL POINTS TO CONSIDER

  • Use of certain products can affect the quality of the tan including perfume, deodorant, oil-based moisturizer and cosmetics.

  • It is important to remember that your skin may sometimes not be in the optimal condition for sunless tanning; when this happens, you may find the tan not as effective as expected. Causing factors of this include sickness, certain medications, hormonal imbalances, stress/exhaustion, dehydration and low pH level of the skin.

  • Although uncommon, a woman’s tan can be directly affected by her hormones. Considering her cycle, it can cause blotchiness or the color not to develop as dark as usual.

  • Oily skin types usually develop lighter and require an extra spray after 24-48 hours to get your base color.
