It's that time of year again when we say so long to the warm and glowing summer sun and say hello the hot lattes, warm booties and holiday cheer.
SPF stands for sun protection factor and essentially refers to the amount of protection a product offers against the sun’s damaging rays. What most people don't know is that these damaging rays still affect your skin even in the cooler months.
So, while the sun may not be out to play, it is still important to remember to protect your skin just as well as you would during the summer months - here's why:
1. You Can Still Get Burned - Even When the Sun's Not Out
The truth is, protecting your skin from UV damage is a year-round commitment. No matter how thick those overcast winter clouds may be, up to 80 percent of the sun's rays can still penetrate them. When you put on SPF, you are allowing your skin to be exposed to the winter sun without reaping the negative side effects of ray exposure.
2. SPF & Chill?
Nothing screams winter time more than snuggling up on the couch with hot cocoa and a solid Netflix lineup. However, according to new research from Estée Lauder, blue light (such as light emitting from your computer and cellphone screens) penetrate your skin deeper than UVA and UVB light. SPF can help block these rays.
3. Rays Reach You Indoors, Too
Whether you're driving or doing chores around your home, UV rays still penetrates through glass (aka, all your windows). Even if you're the type of snow bunny who prefers to hibernate indoors all winter, the rays will still reach you.
4. Prevent Unnecessary Drying and Flaking With SPF-Enriched Products
Protect your skin against seasonal issues like dryness and flaking with moisturizing SPF products. Whether it be SPF powder, foundation, body lotion, or chapstick (yes - lips burn too!) never forget to slab on SPF in the morning and reapply throughout the day.
Rule of Thumb:
As a rule, everyone should be applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on all their exposed areas.
